- Description
- By 8 P.M., there was a mandatory evacuation called for Gatlinburg. The flames were flanking downtown. Since noon, there were over 3,500 boots on the ground from 225 agencies. But the high winds were relentless. Flames rapidly advanced.Even long-time residents hesitated to leave their homes. City manager Cindy Cameron Ogle's husband, Bud, did not initially evacuate. Finally his grand-daughter convinced him to leave. He went to check on his mother Stella (she and her husband Coot were tourism pioneers. But told her, "Our town is getting ready to burn down." She left with Bud. Bud and Cindy, like so many, lost everything.
